Field Training Exercises (FTX) occur three times per year. One weekend per semester is occupied by an FTX (Friday-Sunday), during which the Tar Heel Battalion trains at Camp Butner Training Center in Stem, North Carolina. The battalion performs tactical exercises, weapons familiarization, concurrent training, practices land navigation and completes an obstacle course.

During spring semester, a Joint FTX occurs, which runs from Thursday-Sunday. Duke, St. Augustine, NC State and UNC Army ROTC programs come together to run tactical operations in Fort Bragg, North Carolina.
