Scholarships
Two, Three, and Four Year Scholarships
A prospective student can be awarded a scholarship for tuition, stipend, and book fees worth over $160,000 over a four-year college career. The University of North Carolina Tar Heel Battalion provides 2, 3, and 4-year scholarships that cover the entire cost of tuition and fees. The scholarships are awarded by merit to the most outstanding students who apply. In addition to the scholarship, contracted cadets receive $420 per month stipend and $1,200 per year to defray the cost of books.
Students currently enrolled at UNC can also receive two and three-year scholarships awarded by the Professor of Military Science.
In addition to active duty opportunities, there is also scholarship money available through a Guaranteed Reserve Forces Duty (GRFD) scholarship. With this option, you will serve in the Army Reserve or National Guard while holding a regular civilian job.

Nursing Scholarships
UNC Army ROTC offers scholarships for qualified nursing students who seek to become an Army Nurse. Students who receive a Nursing Scholarship are guaranteed a job as an Army Nurse in an Army hospital upon graduation and commissioning. Nursing scholarships also include board fees, a stethoscope, and all class expenses directly related to nursing. Click here learn more about the ROTC Nursing Scholarships.
Green to Gold Scholarships
UNC Army ROTC also accepts 2, 3, and 4-year Green-to-Gold (GTG) Scholarship recipients. The GTG program is designed for active duty soldiers who desire to complete their education and earn their commission as a 2LT in the Active Duty, National Guard, or Army Reserves. Soldiers who apply for GTG must have approval from their chain of command and must be accepted to the University of North Carolina prior to award of a scholarship. The National Scholarship Board meets on or about 1 April of every year. Completed packets are due by then through your chain of command. Simultaneous Membership Program (SMP)/North Carolina Tuition Assistance Program
ROTC cadets who are in the Army National Guard or the Army Reserves may participate in the SMP during their final two years as a cadet and receive additional benefits including E-5 Drill Pay and the cadet monthly stipend. Those cadets who are in the National Guard may participate in ROTC during all 4 years, which pays all tuition and fees for 12 credit hours per semester. To learn more about this route, contact to our North Carolina Army National Guard Recruiting Liaison, SSG Mason at masoncw@email.unc.edu.
*Note: If you are an officer who graduated from a service academy or received ROTC scholarships, you also qualify for the new GI Bill benefits.
However, your ROTC/Service Academy associated obligated active-duty service time does not count toward the three years necessary to qualify for the full benefits and so must be completed first before the three year service time required to draw from the GI Bill begins to accrue.
